Kenilworth Residents,

Our Gang Awarness Meeting on March 26th went very well. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it.

Kenilworth Community Watch Meeting Minutes

March 26, 2009

· Robert opened the meeting and ran through some information on recent crime activity. ( home break in on Lakewood Drive last month )

· Robert introduced Rev. Alan Smith, the new minister at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church.

· Robert noted that there has been an increase in graffiti along the perimeter of our neighborhood.

· Allison McGehee from Asheville GreenWorks (formerly Quality Forward) spoke on the importance of the Adopt-A-Street program and spoke specifically on how it helps to set the correct example for those visiting Kenilworth and helps prevent other crimes.

o Several adopt-a-street sign up forms were available at the meeting and all were taken. The adopt-a-street sign up sheet is attached as well for those who didn’t get one and would like to adopt their street or one they live near. Don’t forget that a sign will be placed on the street indicating the name of your cleanup crew!! If you want to adopt-a-street just print the attached sign up form and send it to Asheville GreenWorks. This information is also available on the KRA website at:

http://kenilworth.ning.com

o Graffiti removal kits are also available. Please contact Allison at Asheville GreenWorks to get one.

o Several events are coming up that will help us cleanup our neighborhood.

· Keith Whittington, our Park Warden spoke as well.

o New signs are going up in city parks with the rules spelled out and the ordnance numbers that cover those rules

o Keith reminded us that the park is closed from 10pm-6am and we should call the police should we see anyone in the park during those hours.

· Det. Mike Lamb did a presentation on “Gang Awareness” and took many questions on the subject.

o Det. Lamb provided an update on the shooting that occurred on Aurora. No arrests have been made but evictions by the Public Housing Authority have occurred as a result of that incident.

o Det. Lamb indicated that graffiti vandalism is a difficult crime to prosecute because there are restrictions on how these cases can be prosecuted. He requested we make our state representatives aware of this issue. You can reach our state representatives at:

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/mail/compose/?&state=NC&azip=28803&bzip=2428&target=SS&target=SH&target=GV

o There are 26 active gangs with several hundred gang members in Buncombe County. There are no known gang members residing in Kenilworth.

o The closest gang to Kenilworth is FTG , the Four Trey Gangsta Crips which are in Lee Walker Heights.

o Gang members are often recognized by the color and types of clothing they wear, hand signals, and graffiti.

o Det. Lamb said that gangs tend to prey on each other and those who are afraid to call the police. So call the police if you see suspicious activity at 252-1110. If you see actual crimes taking place then call 911 immediately.

o Several websites are available to learn more about gang awareness in NC as well as nationwide:

o There is a show on the History Channel called “Gangland” as well that has good information.
